The story A Question of a trust is about a 50 year old man named Horace Danby who makes locks. He is unmarried and lives with his housekeeper. He is successful enough in his lock making business that he has two helpers. He suffers attack of hay fever in summer.


He is a good citizen but not an honest one as he commits a robbery every year. He is a book lover, his hobby is to collect rare and expensive books. He plans his robberies in such a way that the money he gets from there lasts him for at least twelve months and he is able to buy rare and expensive books with it. He buys these books secretly through an agent.


He plans to commit a robbery at a grange named Shotover Grange. He study the house for a week and He collects all the information about the house like where the family had gone, how many servants were there in the house, what was the name of the dog, the wiring in the house, its rooms and the safe in the house and even information like how much worth of jewels were kept in the safe. The safe is behind a poor painting hanging on a wall.


The real twist in the story comes now, One afternoon the servants of the house had gone to movies and he reaches the grange to commit the robbery. He is too busy in his mission and a woman claiming to be the owner’s wife enters. Seeing her he is very much afraid as he hates the thought of going to jail. She threatens him to send him jail. He plans to please he to save some trouble. He is ready to do her favour if she allows him to go.


She gives him an option that she will forget that she had seen him if he opens the safe for her as she has forgotten the password of the safe and has to go to a party that night. As he wants to escape from the lady so he agrees to help her. He does not realize that he is opening the safe for another thief and that she is not the actual owner of the house. In hurry he doesn't get much time to think.


He leaves happily from the grange thinking that he is safe but doesn't realize the fact that he had opened the safe for someone else that too without wearing his gloves. For two days he keeps the promise that he made the lady not to make any burglary.


Three days later a police officer comes and arrests him saying that his fingerprints had been found at the shotover grange. He tells the officer that he had opened the save for the lady of the house.


He then realizes that he had been fooled by a lady who was herself a thief and from the same profession as his. He is sent to the jail and becomes an assistant librarian. He feels angry whenever someone talks about honour among thieves as he had been cheated by one from his own community.

तीन दिन बाद एक पुलिस अधिकारी आता है और उसे यह कहते हुए गिरफ्तार कर लेता है कि उसकी उंगलियों के निशान शॉटओवर ग्रेंज पर पाए गए थे। वह अधिकारी को बताता है कि उसने घर की महिला के लिए सेव खोला था।



फिर उसे पता चलता है कि उसे एक महिला ने बेवकूफ बनाया था, जो खुद एक चोर थी और उसी पेशे से उसकी थी। उसे जेल भेज दिया जाता है और वह सहायक लाइब्रेरियन बन जाता है। जब भी कोई चोरों के बीच सम्मान की बात करता है तो उसे गुस्सा आता है क्योंकि उसे अपने ही समुदाय के लोगों ने धोखा दिया था।

Then she doesn't even call the police or shout at instead she asks him to open the locker for her even if it means breaking it open as she had forgotten the password of the safe. How is it possible that someone would forget the password of the lock where much of valuable worth of jewels are kept.

Ans: The young pretty lady is also in the same profession as like Horace Danby. She is clever and well planner too. She also threatened Horace Danby to send him to prison. These were the subtle ways that the lady played to deceive Horace Danby.
